Angling on the River Shannon

The Shannon leaves Lough Allen through the Ballintra sluice gates.
This fast section holds good stocks of Bream and Roach early in the season in water 1 to 2 metres deep.
Good wild Brown Trout may also be caught here.

Battle Bridge A prolific Roach water with heavy bags caught early May although the time may vary with the weather conditions.
Hartley Bridge Is good for general fishing with Roach, Rudd, and Hybrids making nice catches of 10kg a regular feature and big catches of Bream are to be found in this 2 metre deep section especially if pre-baiting is undertaken the evening before.
Carrick on Shannon The fishing is now limited due to building developments but a few spots can be found near the quay. Roach and Hybrids and some quality Perch are kind to the angler and will entertain you.
Mud-Flats Just outside Carrick "ask in tackle shop for directions" park tidily seeking permission from the house owner. Below you the wider Shannon with twenty fishing stands. The deeper water, 5 metres, is off the last 3 stands to the right but all will give you a good days fishing. Past the last stand to the left is a large 9 metre hole which is fished from a gravel bank. Frequent 40 to 45 kilos catches of Bream can be had with pre-baiting.
Jamestown Where a few Trout can be caught below the weir and good bags of Roach in the streamy water for the next ½ km, a great venue to practice your stickfloat skills around to the left towards the main road is a useful bay fishing well at night for Bream good Roach and Hybrids and Tench. This is very comfortable in a west wind.
Lough Boderg Through which the Shannon flows is a good match stretch where feeder or float can be used depending on conditions. You may be lucky and find a nice shoal of Bream supplemented by large Hybrids and Roach.
Roosky The fishing here can be great but you have to but in the work by seeking out the hotspots, good swims up around the locks and in the centre by the bridge where the Roach fishing can be great. Try to hire a boat to get to Pigeon Island fish the top end deep water for your 100lb bag of Bream/Hybrids.

If you require any information on particular areas that you would like to fish why not email me unabhan2@eircom.net before you come on your holiday and I will do my best to find all the up to date news, maps, best methods, and where the best swims are located on the loughs/rivers. The more information you have before you come will save you time and give you more fishing/drinking time which cannot be a bad thing
