Boyle
Pleasure Grounds,
Shop Street, Boyle
A place where you can sit and rest, watch a game of
soccer on the all-weather pitch, let the children
play in the enclosed safe playground, or walk along
by Boyle River.
This is where the Military band used to play years
ago. From here you can see the front of King House.
A monument stands beside the large holm oak tree.
In 1763 Sir Edward King had a statue and pier in honour
of King William lll erected on the bridge beside The
Royal Hotel . D'Alton Annals of Boyle refer to 'a
statue of King William representing his majesty with
a crown of Laurel on his head and the Order of the
Garter on his knee'. When the new bridge was built
in 1834, Viscount Lorton had the monument moved to
the Pleasure Grounds. Later ,during the 'Troubles'
in the early 1920's, the statue was beheaded. Subsequently
the rest of the statue was removed and now only the
pedestal remains.
